Naniwa Specialty Stones

As you folks know, we probably hone more straight razors than anyone else in the world. As a result, we are constantly experimenting with different products and techniques that enable us to sharpen and provide you with great shaving straight razors.

We are very pleased to be able to offer to you the Naniwa line of Specialty Stones from Osaka, Japan. These water stones produce a superior edge for your razors at a very reasonable price.

The Naniwa Specialty Stones are resin bonded stones that have a wonderful feel (a little softer than the Shapton Glass Stones) and are fast cutting stones. The 12,000 grit stone produces as nice a final polish on an edge as any stone on the market, in our opinion.

These stones feel like they were specifically made for sharpening straight razors. They are one of the most reliable and consistent stones we have ever used. The feel is soft although the cutting power is strong. When it comes to setting bevels, the 1K stone is superior. It is our go to stone as it really cuts fast and there is minimal wear on the spine that comes from some other stones.

We are introducing these stones in 220, 400, 800, 1000, 2000, 3000, 5000, 8000, 10,000 and 12,000 grit. The Specialty Stones are 8 1/4 inches long by 2 3/4 inches wide and are 3/8 inch thick. They do not need to be soaked. Just a spray or splash of water over the surface until the water starts to pool and you are ready to go.

If you are just learning how to hone your own straight razors or if you are already experienced in honing straight razors, you will find these stones easy to work with and they produce fantastic results. The Naniwa Specialty Stones work well for everything from restoring an edge or repairing chips to simply touching up the edge. Thousands of people have learned to hone with these stones and continue to enjoy the results they give. The are one of the easiest stones to learn to hone on!

As with most water stones, these stones will need to be lapped/cleaned and caution should be used not to put excessive pressure on the edges as they can develop small gouges if you dig the edge into the stone. We tested over 500 straight razors with these stones and have not have any problems with the hones in this area. This is not a hone for sharpening chisels as the chisel type tool can gouge the stone as well. Again this was not even a consideration with a straight razor. The stones we tested were lapped after every use with no appreciable signs of wear. The Specialty Stones should provide you with years of productive use, even if you end up honing as many razors as we do.

In our opinion, you cannot find a better stone or bargain for sharpening and maintaining your raozrs.
